COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Residents are reacting to news that Columbus leaders want to keep guns and other dangerous weapons out of city recreation facilities.

District 1 Councilman Byron Hickey told News Leader 9 that while leaders have long wanted restrictions in place, a deadly shooting last month pushed the process forward.

Some residents say they always thought weapons were already prohibited inside recreation centers. They believe the proposed ban would make them feel safer while using the gyms and other amenities.

“I didn’t know they could be inside a recreational facility. If you are beefing with somebody or you have issues with someone, why would you even want to bring it here?” said Columbus resident Asia Horton.
