BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Fatal and non-fatal overdoses are trending down. It’s great news for our region, which saw fatalities going up until 2023.

Vermont’s most recent data shows 54 people have died this year from overdoses. The city of Burlington has decided it wants to bring that number down further with an overdose prevention center. But when will it arrive?

“Accidental drug overdose is the leading cause of death in Vermont for Vermonters, neighbors, family members 50 and below,” said Burlington resident Ed Baker.

Baker believes Burlington needs an overdose prevention center, and says it should have been here yesterday.

He blames bureaucracy coupled with stigma, and is frustrated with what he sees as a lack of progress.
