LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The longest-serving sheriff in Jefferson County's history died Tuesday night at the age of 86, surrounded by his family.
Sheriff John Aubrey led the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for 27 years.
Mayor Craig Greenberg said Wednesday it is his responsibility to appoint an interim sheriff.
When asked about the process, the mayor said, "It's just too early. Way too early."
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Aubrey was a true public servant who dedicated his career to protecting Kentuckians.
