Robert Hellström, PhD, professor of geography at Bridgewater State University, will discuss “Micro-Climates; How Climate Change is Influencing Local Weather” on Tuesday, October 7, at The Last Round Bar & Grille, 908 Purchase Street in New Bedford.

Micro-climates are localized climates impacted by landscapes; less-predictable wind patterns over Buzzards Bay or more-frequent coastal flooding, for example. Understanding micro-climates and how they impact local resources is more important than understanding climate change itself, according to Hellström, because such knowledge can help a community be at-the-ready for weather anomalies and remain resilient.

Over the years Hellström has gained evidence of significant micro-climates. His snow stakes and soil temperature probes at Harvard Forest
