The University of Wollongong has been found by the Fair Work Ombudsman to have underpaid 5,340 workers over $6 million in wages and superannuation, joining eight other tertiary institutions to sign an enforceable undertaking for committing such an offence.

In July 2023, the University of Wollongong admitted to underpaying an estimated 6,000 casual employees $8 million after discovering numerous inconsistencies.

It then reported itself to the Fair Work Ombudsman.

An independent auditor was assigned to determine the period the underpayments took place, with the National Tertiary Education Union saying that it stretched back to at least 2016.
