Denmark has reached out to NATO following a drone incident at Aalborg Airport, which caused inbound flights to be diverted. The airport, which also serves military purposes, was temporarily closed last night due to the presence of drones in its airspace. The police confirmed on social media that they were investigating the situation, stating, "Drones have been observed near Aalborg airport and the airspace is closed. The police are present and investigating further."

Reports indicate that the drones were flying with their lights on, raising concerns about their origin. Denmark has not yet confirmed whether it has invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which allows a member state to seek consultations when it feels its territorial integrity is under threat. This is distinct from Article 5, which pertains to collective defence in the event of an attack.

Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the drone incident as a "hybrid attack" likely orchestrated by a "professional actor." He noted that the drones appeared to have been launched locally, as there is currently no evidence linking the incident to Russia. However, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen acknowledged that Russian involvement could not be entirely dismissed, especially in light of a similar drone-related incident at Copenhagen Airport last week.

At a press conference, Poulsen stated, "There can be no doubt that everything points to this being the work of a professional actor when we are talking about such a systematic operation in so many locations at virtually the same time. This is what I would define as a hybrid attack using different types of drones." He also mentioned that while the Danish armed forces had the capability to shoot down the drones, they opted against it due to potential risks to civilians.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another disruption at Copenhagen Airport, which was forced to close earlier this week due to drone sightings. Up to three autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were reported in the airspace over the airport, prompting a swift police response.
