Grade six students from St. Theresa’s Elementary in St. John’s spent yesterday morning planting trees outside the Mews Centre as part of National Tree Day.
Nearly a dozen trees were planted as part of the initiative, which also coincided with National Forest Week.
Bruce Roberts, an ecologist with Tree Canada, was at the event talking with students and says the event is especially important this year, given the loss of so many trees during an unprecedented wildfire season.
“We’ve actually mentioned (to the students) how important fire smarting and planting the right trees in the right place and how some trees are better for fire protection, not quite so flammable, close to buildings,” he told VOCM News.
