Comey has a complicated history with Trump. He was appointed by Barack Obama but was widely spurned by Democrats after he announced a new investigation into then-candidate Hillary Clinton over her use of a private email server just days before the 2016 election. He continued to serve in the role after Donald Trump was elected in 2016, but was
