On a sunny September afternoon, photojournalist Derek Thayer and I visited Fenway long before first pitch against the Athletics. We stood on the edge of the infield and watched Sox legend-turned-assistant-coach Jason Varitek jeer fielders as they tried to lob baseballs into a bucket placed next to first base. We admired hitters as they launched batting practice balls over the Green Monster in left field.
