In the nightmarish hours after their daughter went missing in the July 4 floods, CiCi and Will Steward, the parents of eight-year-old Cile Steward, say they received a phone call from administrators at Camp Mystic, the iconic Hill Country summer camp that had just been overwhelmed by historic floodwater.

The phone call was “brisk,” the parents say, and informed them only that their child, who was staying in the Twins II cabin, was “unaccounted for.” It would be the last time that camp officials specifically acknowledged the family’s loss, according to a new statement released by the Steward family on behalf of themselves and other families of campers who died in the flood.
