LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Checking out at the grocery store could take you longer in Long Beach. Most self-checkout lanes are closed due to a new local ordinance.
As part of new city rules, larger grocery stores and retail drug stores are required to staff at least one worker to supervise every three self-checkout stations.
The city says the goal is to advance public safety and prevent retail theft.
According to Vons' parent company, Albertsons, there are four Vons locations in Long Beach that are unable to operate the kiosks. It's not clear if or when the stations will reopen.
