FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) -- Lauderdale County Sheriff's Deputy Karen Knox is hanging up her badge and uniform after 36 years of service.

Deputy Knox has been with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office for 36 years, and Thursday marked her very last day.

“It’s just a job. I’ve enjoyed it, every bit of it. I hate to leave, but it’s time,” Knox said.

Knox began her career at the age of 18, working in the administrative side of the sheriff's office. Then one day, she decided she wanted to protect and serve. She was hired on as the first-ever female deputy with LCSO.

“Everything worked well. I worked with the men well, and they worked with me,” Knox said.

Deputy Knox told News 19 that she has a message to all women who want to be in law enforcement.
