MANTEO, N.C. — A Roanoke Island woman is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after deputies say a domestic disturbance escalated over the weekend.

On Sunday, September 21 around 10 p.m., Dare County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call in the 100 block of Etheridge Road in Manteo. According to the sheriff’s office, 48-year-old Bessy M. Mejia-Varela was involved in a verbal and physical altercation with another individual.

During the response, officials say Mejia-Varela assaulted law enforcement, leading to additional charges. She was arrested and charged with:

Felony Malicious Conduct by Prisoner

Misdemeanor Assault on a Government Official/Employee

Misdemeanor Simple Assault

Misdemeanor Domestic Violence

Misdemeanor Resisting, Delaying, or Obstructing a Public Officer
