WASHINGTON — A flight leaving Dulles Airport to Roanoke, Virginia, experienced a runway overrun while landing on Wednesday evening around 10 p.m.

According to CommuteAir, Flight 4339, operating as United Express, was carrying 50 passengers and three crew members at the time of landing.

No injuries were reported, and all passengers were safely shuttled from the aircraft to the terminal.

According to Rick Breitenfeldt, a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft was safely stopped by the Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) bed at the end of the runway. When an aircraft overruns the runway, tires sink into the lightweight crushable materials, causing it to come to a stop.

Currently, there are 122 EMAS systems at 70 airports across the country.
