HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - Connecticut is joining 40 other states on handling radioactive waste.
This includes radioactive materials used in healthcare facilities and research, such as dyes used in certain MRIs.
Today, Governor Lamont signed an agreement that allows the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to oversee licensing and inspection.
Currently, businesses must pay for their radioactive material to be handled and removed. This helps streamline the process.
The agreement is expected to save Connecticut businesses close to $2,000,000.
“There are more than 100 businesses in the research, manufacturing, and healthcare fields that work with these types of materials, and they will be able to benefit from this transition,” said Commissioner Katie Dykes, DEEP.
