A Qantas flight from Sydney to Auckland made a mayday call on Friday due to a fire alert, but the airline later indicated it was likely a false alarm. The Boeing 737's pilot requested an emergency landing after receiving intermittent warnings about a possible fire in the cargo hold.
According to a statement from Qantas, preliminary investigations revealed no fire in the front cargo hold. The airline's engineers are set to inspect the aircraft to determine the cause of the alerts.
There were 156 passengers on board the flight. A spokesperson confirmed that all passengers safely exited the plane after landing.
Emergency services were on standby at Auckland Airport in response to the mayday call. Reports indicated that 16 fire trucks from the Auckland area were dispatched to the scene.
Paramedics assessed two individuals at the airport, but no one required hospitalization.
Auckland Airport stated that the airfield is returning to normal operations, although there may be slight delays for both departing and arriving flights.
