ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — On Thursday, leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the renaming of a school in Rochester in honor of Dr. Iris J. Banister.

The Rochester Board of Education voted in June to rename the John James Audubon School in memory of Dr. Banister, who passed away in March.

"She was deeply engaged in community," said Simeon Banister, Dr. Banister's son, sharing stories of his mother's extensive involvement.

Dr. Banister was a dedicated educator, advocate, and mentor within the Rochester City School District.

School leaders expressed their excitement about continuing Dr. Banister's legacy with the support of her family and community members.
