BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Alabama has carried out its fourth execution of the year after 50-year-old Geoffrey West was put to death with nitrogen gas.
West was convicted of the 1997 murder of Margaret Berry in Etowah County. Berry was working as a clerk at a gas station the night West robbed it.
West’s nitrogen hypoxia execution took roughly 15 minutes, according to ADOC commissioner John Hamm.
Governor Kay Ivey and Attorney General Steve Marshall Thursday night said justice had been served in statements issued after West was declared dead at 6:22 p.m.
West declined a chance for final words in the death chamber, but his attorney sent out a written statement that read as follows:
