The Labour Government and its new DWP boss, Pat McFadden, are being urged to implement a tough crackdown on Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and the sickness element of Universal Credit.

A leading think tank says these benefits should be removed from claimants with milder types of anxiety, depression or ADHD – equivalent to around 1.1 million people – with remaining payments for more serious versions of these conditions reduced to £103 per week.

The Centre for Social Justice says this would save £7.4 billion by 2029/30, of which at least £1 billion should be reinvested in NHS therapy and DWP employment support.
