A 67-year-old Dowagiac man was injured and a cow was killed in a traffic crash in Mason Township early Friday, Sept. 26, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Department.

The driver was headed south on Calvin Center Road, just north of U.S. 12 about 3:30 a.m. when he hit the animal on the roadway.

The sheriff's department said the driver had to be assisted out of the vehicle by deputies.

The man was the only occupant in the vehicle and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Cass County Road Patrol Capt. John Johnson said the cow had escaped from a field.

Johnson said cow crashes are unusual in a county that reports just under 1,000 deer crashes a year.
