COLUMBIA, S.C. — A year after the devastating affects of Hurricane Helene, the US Department of Agriculture's Forest Service says it has made significant progress in repairing and restoring the Sumter National Forest in South Carolina.

“Hurricane Helene left terrible destruction in its wake, including to the Sumter National Forest and surrounding communities,” said Daniel McInnis, forest supervisor. “We have spent the year rebuilding, thanks to the many amazing partners – federal, state and local, volunteers and others, and have made significant progress. Much work remains but we do want to take a moment to celebrate all the people who have helped us recover."

Sumter National Forest is 370,442 acres divided into three separate districts located in the northwestern part of the state:
