SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WKRG) — A bronze statue of Admiral Raphael Semmes, sitting atop the original base, will be dedicated this weekend at Fort McDermott Confederate Memorial Park in Spanish Fort, a news release said.
The new statue will be displayed on the original 125-year-old granite base that was erected in the 1900s to hold another statue of Admiral Semmes. Most recently, the statue and base were on Government Street in downtown Mobile.
In June 2020, the statue was vandalized and eventually taken down. The statue of Semmes was put in the Mobile History Museum, while the base was put in storage.
That's when the local Sons of Confederate Veterans worked with the City of Mobile to take possession of the base. In May of this year, the base was moved to Fort McDermott to await its new sta
