Each month, the community nominates their favorite teachers and educators from the St. Louis region to be the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Teacher of the Month. September’s winner is Cassandra Thornton, a fourth-grade math and science teacher at Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary School in East St. Louis School District 189. Mrs. Thornton received a $250 gift card courtesy of Elco Chevrolet-Cadillac .

I have been teaching for 13 years. After receiving my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at Harris-Stowe University here in St. Louis, I began teaching at Walbridge STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Academy with St. Louis Public Schools. For 10 years, I taught first and third grade there and developed a love for all things STEM
