METAMORA, Ind. — What’s often referred to as “Indiana's Canal Town” in Franklin County has dried up.

Metamora's Whitewater Canal isn’t flowing at the moment, and it hasn’t been for quite some time now. Visitors to the historic town can see the process of how corn meal was ground back in the 1800s when the community was first platted, as their grist mill still runs today.

“As I’m sure you noticed when you were out there, the water wheel is not spinning,” said site manager Joey Smith, when giving a demonstration. "There is no water in the canal.”

A backup electric motor has instead powered the mill for the last several weeks.

No water has concerned people in town, as the Canal Days Autumn Festival is in early October and is their busiest weekend of the year.
