COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has declared as a state of emergency in South Carolina as the state gets ready for a potential encounter with a tropical system next week.

McMaster issued an executive order around 5 p.m. Friday in preparation for what is now known as Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine. The storm is eventually expected to become Imelda once it strengthens into a tropical storm, and potentially, a hurricane.

By issuing the order, the has activated the South Carolina Emergency Operations Plan and directed the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) to commence statewide preparation and coordination procedures with all relevant local, state, and federal agencies in advance of the landfall of a potential Tropical Storm or Hurricane.
