A 24-year-old police officer from Northamptonshire has died following injuries sustained while responding to a car crash. PC Faizaan Najeeb was attending a single-vehicle incident on Station Road, Raunds, at approximately 12.35am on September 19 when he was struck by a blue VW Polo.
After the collision, PC Najeeb was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where he sadly passed away in the early hours of Friday. Northamptonshire Chief Constable Ivan Balhatchet confirmed the news, expressing profound sadness over the loss.
A man in his 20s, who was arrested at the scene, has been released on bail as investigations continue. PC Najeeb had been serving with the response team in Wellingborough since joining Northamptonshire Police. In accordance with police tradition, his collar number P1967 will be retired in his memory.
Chief Constable Balhatchet stated, "Words cannot describe the sadness felt when an officer loses his life serving in the line of duty. The entire Northamptonshire Police family wish to pass on our deepest condolences to his family and friends at this truly awful point in time."
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is conducting an investigation into the incident, and specialist family liaison officers will provide support to PC Najeeb's family in the coming days and weeks. An internal health and safety investigation is also underway.
In tribute to PC Najeeb, Northamptonshire Police will observe a two-minute silence at its Wootton Hall headquarters, where a flag has been flown at half-mast. This tragic event follows the recent death of PC Ian Minett from Gloucestershire Police, whose passing is being treated as unexplained but non-suspicious.
