The Oakland Police Commission agreed last night with a set of changes sought by OPD Chief Floyd Mitchell to the department’s vehicle pursuit policy .
Mitchell has wanted to make three changes to the pursuit policy for months now, including:
Reinstating language that an officer or supervisor “shall not be criticized nor disciplined” for ending a chase.
Changing the rules so that officers only need to notify their supervisor that they are chasing someone after the chase has begun. Officers would only need to obtain verbal approval from their supervisor to continue the chase.
Rescinding Special Order 9212 , which was instituted in December 2022 by then-former Chief LeRonne Armstrong after a rise in pursuits ending in injuries and deaths. The special order required police to end a chas
