Oakland is still far from implementing a state law that took effect in January, allowing cities to cite drivers who park so close to a corner that they block the field of vision for other drivers and pedestrians.

That’s according to Sean Maher, the city’s communications director, in an interview with The Oaklandside this week.

The daylighting law, a term used by transportation experts to refer to the removal of anything that blocks the field of vision, was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2023. It prohibits drivers from parking, standing, or stopping at a curb within 20 feet of any intersection that includes a crosswalk, or within 15 feet of an intersection with curb extensions, such as bulbouts .
