COLUMBIA, S.C. — A court hearing in Richland County pitted the South Carolina State Voters Commission and a Calhoun County plaintiff against each other in a debate over whether voter registration data can be shared with the U.S. Department of Justice.
Governor Henry McMaster filed a motion Friday morning to dismiss the case.
Dr. Crook, the plaintiff, is challenging the commission’s authority to share personal voter information. Her attorney, Skyler B. Hutto, told the court the lawsuit is about protecting information that state law already recognizes as highly sensitive.
“It cannot be the case that Dr. Crook does not have the ability to come to court to protect her own information," Hutto said. "Information that the General Assembly has specifically stated is ripe for abuse and fraud.
