More than 50 years after a 21-year-old woman was murdered in her home East Hartford, Conn., police have arrested and charged a man with her death.

George Legere, 77, was arrested in prison Wednesday on a warrant charging him with murder in the death of Janet Couture in October 1973, the East Hartford Police Department said in a statement.

“We are committed to pursuing justice in every case, no matter how much time has passed,” East Hartford Police Chief Mack S. Hawkins said in the statement. “For the Couture family, this is especially significant, and we hope it brings them some measure of peace.”
