Interac users faced difficulties with debit payments on Friday, starting around 4 p.m. Reports indicated that over 1,500 users experienced payment failures by 6 p.m. This number decreased to approximately 360 users by 8:30 p.m. Most of the complaints, about 78 percent, were related to issues with making purchases.
In response to the situation, Interac acknowledged the problems in a social media post. The company stated, "We understand some customers are unable to pay with debit at select merchants. Interac services are operating normally." However, they did not provide additional details regarding the cause of the issues.
Later, a spokesperson for Interac explained that the problems might have originated from a payment service provider. The spokesperson noted, "Interac was informed that a payment service provider may have experienced some issues in processing transactions at selected merchants and the issue was resolved earlier this evening. We can confirm that Interac services operated normally throughout the day."
In addition to the Interac issues, users reported problems with other payment services, including Visa, Moneris, and Mastercard, on Friday evening. It remains unclear if there is any connection between these outages and the issues experienced by Interac users.
