More than a thousand mourners have gathered at a church in Melbourne's north-west to farewell a 15-year-old boy whose life was tragically cut short earlier this month.

Family, friends, schoolmates and basketball teammates, along with South Sudanese Catholic choir St Bakhita, attended the funeral of Dau Akueng in Melbourne's north-west on Saturday morning.

The service, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Kings Park, follows a funeral held yesterday to remember his friend, 12-year-old Chol Achiek .

The boys were on their way home from a basketball stadium in Cobblebank, near Melton, when they were allegedly set upon by a group of people wearing masks and wielding bladed weapons on September 6.
