LONG BEACH — A strong second-half performance helped Carson’s football team defeat St. Pius X-St. Matthias, 20-8, on Friday for the second consecutive year.
Trailing by five points late in the fourth quarter, St. Pius looked like it was about to retake the lead. A couple of penalties against the Carson defense helped the Warriors move near the red zone.
The drive came to an end when St. Pius quarterback Jassi Williams fumbled the ball on a designed quarterback scramble. Colts defensive back Darren Panton swooped in and scooped up the ball to stop the offensive drive.
“We knew it was a quarterback sneak. I’d seen it, (the ball) came back my way and I got to it,” said Panton.
