LEDYARD, Conn. — Police and firefighters in Ledyard and Gales Ferry conducted a water rescue early Saturday morning after a vehicle went into the Thames River.

Police were dispatched to the Yale Boat Launch on Hurlbutt Road in Gales Ferry around 4:15 a.m. Saturday.

Responding officers found the vehicle about 50 feet from shore with the driver inside. Ledyard police officers went into the water and tried to access the vehicle, which then became fully submerged.

A firefighter from the Gales Ferry Fire Department used his equipment to break the driver's side window, and crews rescued the driver from the vehicle, officials said.

The driver was found unresponsive but was revived with medical care once he was brought to shore, police said. He was then taken to an area hospital.
