HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Ham radio enthusiasts descended on Chemung County Saturday for the 50th annual Hamfest/Computerfest. The event featured equipment and gadgets for amateur radio fans to sink their teeth into. However, organizers say the event was way more than just a festival.
"We are the last line of communication," said Tony Vitucci, Emergency Coordinator for the Chemung County Amateur Radio Emergency Service. "We prepare for national disasters, for hurricanes, or anything that might go through [the area]."
If phone lines go down and television signals fail, ham radio operators will be there in case of emergency. These volunteer groups across the country partner directly with the National Weather Service and local emergency coordinators in times of crisis. Organizers of the Ha
