DEERFIELD, Wis. (WKOW) — North Winds Rescue in Deerfield not only gives horses a second chance, but it's also one of nine groups in Wisconsin chosen to receive funding for veteran mental health programs.

The rescue's third annual open house is its biggest event of the year. They focus on taking in neglected and abused horses, rehabilitating them, and helping them find new homes. This year, the rescue charged admission for the first time.

"We weren't sure how that was going to be received. And I am pleasantly surprised. The community really showed up," said Valerie Nyenhuis.
