Rob Edwards revealed that illness during the week meant he felt best not to start Manchester City loan star Sverre Nypan at Southampton, with Morgan Whittaker restored to the Middlesbrough starting line-up.

Nypan had enjoyed his first start for Boro last Friday evening and helped his side beat West Brom 2-1 as his fledgling reputation was enhanced further. But his switch to the bench at St Mary’s ended up being Edwards’ only change for Saturday’s game.

In the end, though far from at their best on the day, Boro managed to come away from Southampton with a hard-earned away point. Edwards talked up Whittaker after - with the forward coming under much scrutiny of late.
