Nicola Sturgeon and Nadia El-Nakla, wife of ex–first minister Humza Yousaf , have signed an open letter rejecting claims by the far right that they are “defenders of women”. ‌

The pair joined more than 200 women and organisations backing the statement, which accuses extremists of spreading “racist lies” under the guise of protecting women and girls. ‌

High-profile names including actress and comedian Elaine C Smith, authors Val McDermid and Denise Mina, musician Clare Grogan, and folk singer Iona Fyfe are also among the signatories. Trade union leaders Andrea Bradley, of the EIS teaching union, and STUC general secretary Roz Foyer have lent their support too. ‌

The letter, organised by Women Against The Far Right Scotland, will be officially launched
