Santa Marians have the chance to participate in the Manhattan Short Film Festival next week, as the annual film festival returns to screens around the globe including the Elwin Mussell Center and the Santa Maria Public Library.

The film festival is in its 28th year, and features 10 films shown to audiences in more than 500 cities worldwide with audience members getting to vote on who they think was the best.

The winners of awards, including Best Film and Best Actor awards, will be announced worldwide on Monday, Oct. 6.

According to information from the Recreation and Parks Department, the festival highlights emerging filmmakers whose work has gone on to receive Academy Award recognition.

All 10 films are automatically Oscar-qualified by virtue of their selection.
