It took a lot longer than expected, and it was on the verge of slipping away, but the Blue Jays have won the American League East for the first time in a decade.
Alejandro Kirk’s first-inning grand slam put the Jays on top, and his fifth-inning homer gave him a career-high six RBIs as Toronto hammered the Tampa Bay Rays 13-4 in front of an ecstatic sold-out crowd at Rogers Centre on Sunday. The New York Yankees won too, but it didn’t matter.
