PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Two Portsmouth police officers were injured in an alleged arson on Caroline Avenue in Portsmouth Sunday afternoon.
According to the Portsmouth Police Department, officers responded to a home in the 4500 block of Caroline Avenue for a domestic abuse about 2:46 p.m. When they arrived, they began talking to a woman to begin their investigation.
However, they smelled gas and smoke, “leading them to discover an adult male setting the house on fire,” the press release from Portsmouth police stated.
The officers attempted to rescue the man from the fire, and he resisted and fought them, police said.
Both officers sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital. There is no word on their condition.
The suspect was taken into custody.
