CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The Gilmerton Bridge in Chesapeake is closed in both directions following a serious crash that sent multiple people to area hospitals.

The crash happened about 8 p.m. Sunday on the east side of the Gilmerton Bridge, according to the Chesapeake Police Department.

Police said preliminary investigation showed a vehicle traveling eastbound on South Military Highway crossed over the center line into oncoming traffic, colliding with a westbound vehicle.

Two patients were taken to hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition, police said. One is in critical condition.

Gilmerton Bridge is temporarily closed in both directions.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
