GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- Several Genesee County school districts will be closed to begin the week following a shooting and fire on Sunday morning at a Grand Blanc Township church that left multiple people dead.

“GBCS will be closed tomorrow, Monday, September 29, 2025,” reads an announcement on Grand Blanc Community Schools’ Facebook page and website.

Families and staff in the district received a letter in their email from district Superintendent Dr. Trevor Alward, per the announcement.

Four people have died following the incident on Sunday, Sept. 29 , at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township.

Police have identified the man accused of shooting 10 people and setting the church on fire as 40-year-old Burton resident Thomas Jacob Sanford .
