FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) -- A man is recovering in the hospital after he was shot by a Fairfax County police officer early Monday morning, according to police. Now, investigators are working to learn what led up to the incident.

Details remain limited; however, the Fairfax County Police Department said the shooting happened in the 9700 block of Church Way in Burke.

A preliminary investigation indicated that a police officer discharged her gun at a man who was outside his home, police detailed.

The man was taken to the hospital in "non-life-threatening condition."
