AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Early Thursday morning multiple fire agencies responded to a structure fire on West I-40 near Hope Rd. that left Verlin Belcher and his dog displaced.

According to Belcher, he was sleeping in one of the impacted units when his dog, Rascal, woke him up with non-stop barking.

Belcher says that is when he realized the room was filled with smoke and he called 911.

“Rascal woke me up at six o’clock barking and yapping waking me up. I woke up and the room was full of smoke, and so I went outside and I knew it was a fire,” said Belcher.

Belcher says without his dog Rascal, he may have not been woken up by the smoke.

According to Verlin, this is the second time to be displaced by a fire just this year, but he will continue to keep his faith above all.
