SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) - One year after Hurricane Helene tore through Spartanburg County, community members gathered Monday to honor the lives lost and those who jumped into action.

A year ago, Helene caused unprecedented damage in Spartanburg County. While physical progress has been made, some people's hearts are forever burdened by that day.

"What hasn't changed over that year is the loss of these families experienced during that process," said Cole Alverson, the Spartanburg County administrator. "So, it's important for us as a community to both acknowledge and remember those individuals."

Dozens gathered at Cleveland Park to honor nine lives lost because of the storm.

Lauren Blair paid tribute to their father Gene, who passed just weeks after learning he would be a grandfather.
