BENNINGTON — The Squire Recovery Housing Project is up and operating on North Street, and Cornerstone Housing expects work on renovation of the Cora B. Whitney Senior Living Facility on Gage Street to begin around the end of this year.

Mary Cohen, executive director of Cornerstone Housing Partners, updated the Bennington Select Board at their Sept. 22 meeting. Part of her appearance was a “closeout” hearing required because the town received a $700,000 grant from the state under the Vermont Community Development Program for the Squire House renovation.

The grant was used to create transitional housing units at 184 North St. through rehab of the historic house to serve eight women recovering from substance use disorder for eight to 14 months or longer if needed. This will allow women to
