CHICAGO (WGN) — A child is recovering in the hospital on Tuesday morning after a shooting along the Bishop Ford Freeway on the city's South Side overnight.

According to Illinois State Police troopers, the incident unfolded along the northbound lanes of I-94, near Michigan Avenue.

Troopers said they learned of the incident after they were called to a hospital around 7 p.m. Monday, following a report that a 6-year-old boy had been shot.

Further investigation indicated that the child was struck by gunfire while he was sitting as a passenger in a vehicle as it made its way down I-94.

Troopers responded to the scene and canvassed the area around 9:15 p.m., but the roadway reopened by 11:35 p.m.
