Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has said that the culture of Bengali Muslims is Hindu, not Arab. Reacting to this, renowned lyricist-poet Javed Akhtar said that we should also appreciate the Ganga-Jamuni Awadhi culture, which has nothing to do with Arab.

Taslima said in her post on X on Tuesday, on the occasion of Durga Ashtami, "The ancestors of Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Muslims, and even atheists in India were almost all Indian Hindus. We Bengalis, whatever religion or philosophy we may have adopted, are from India in our national identity. Bengali Muslim culture is not Arab culture. Its culture is Bengali culture, and that culture is Hindu tradition."
