At least 10 ducks were found dead, some with mangled bodies and missing their heads, at the South Meadows Community Pond on Monday, Sept. 29.

A Canada goose at the scene was covered in blood, still alive but unable to move anything but its head.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife told the RGJ on Tuesday that the goose and ducks appeared to be victims of a harmful algal bloom at the pond.

Once they were sick, the birds were likely attacked by predators, a wildlife expert told the RGJ.

NDOW said harmful algal blooms "are naturally occurring events, and unfortunately, they can sometimes lead to fish and wildlife deaths when conditions allow them to develop."

It said NDOW staff are monitoring the situation.
